Aligning Nonparty Stakeholder Engagement with Critical Political Mechanisms at COP24 for a High Ambition Outcome

On behalf of Galvanizing the Groundswell of Climate Action, this meeting will be hosted by the Climate Action Network-International, Oxford University, the Stanley Center, the World Resources Institute, and WWF (World Wide Fund for Nature).

This session aims to take stock of the numerous events and developments over the previous months and inform nonparty stakeholder engagement of the ambition policy mechanisms during COP24. The discussion will focus on the following areas:

• Take stock of the Global Climate Action Summit (GCAS) and efforts to carry the outcomes forward: As the coalition that delivered GCAS brings the momentum to COP24 and beyond, what objectives and plans have they formulated? What are key goals for COP24 to take this coalition forward? How can they engage further with nonparty stakeholders, governments, and international institutions?
• Align on an ambition outcome for COP24: With the release of the IPCC Special Report on 1.5°C, the conclusion of the Climate Vulnerable Forum (CVF) Virtual Summit with a strong call for increasing ambition, the call for countries to step up on climate ambition has never been more forceful. What expectation does this set for the outcomes of COP24? How can the GCAS coalition as well as other nonparty stakeholders push countries toward an ambitious outcome?
• Guidance for engaging political mechanisms at COP24: With the Talanoa Dialogue, there will be more opportunities for nonparty stakeholders to engage countries at a political level than ever before in the UNFCCC. In addition, Global Climate Action continues to mobilize nonparty stakeholders to advance commitments and expand climate action to new areas. What are key messages for nonparty stakeholders to deliver at the Talanoa Dialogue and Global Climate Action sequence? What outcomes in COP24 can put nonparty stakeholders in a stronger position to contribute positively to international climate politics through 2020?
