The 28th United Nations Climate Change Conference of the Parties (COP28) that took place in Dubai, United Arab Emirates, saw the first-ever Global Stocktake since the Paris Agreement, assessing the progress by countries to date on climate mitigation, adaptation, and equitable implementation.

Thirty journalists from low- and middle-income countries reported on COP28 as part of the Climate Change Media Partnership (CCMP) co-organized by Internews’ Earth Journalism Network (EJN) and the Stanley Center for Peace and Security. Twenty fellows attended and reported on COP28 in person in Dubai, and ten fellows covered the conference remotely from their home countries.

The UN climate negotiations convened in Dubai amid increasing calls for developed countries—who have historically been the most responsible for burning fossil fuels and driving climate change—to fully meet their obligations and commitments to provide climate finance to low- and middle-income countries.

Reporting by CCMP Fellows at COP28 promoted accountability and informed audiences about how nations and international institutions are responding to the climate crisis.

Several of the fellows participated in a discussion at the World Health Organization’s COP28 Health Pavilion about how journalists reporting on climate change and health can help the public and policymakers gain a better understanding of climate impacts as well as the health arguments for climate action.
