The Future of Global Climate Action: From UNCAS to COP25 and Beyond

Invitation Only

This event is hosted by High-Level Climate Action Champion of Chile, Gonzalo Muñoz, and Galvanizing the Groundswell of Climate Actions and is organized by the Stanley Center. The discussion will feature opening remarks from Minister of Environment of Chile and President of COP25, Carolina Schmidt; UNFCCC Executive Secretary, Patricia Espinosa; and High-Level Climate Champion, Gonzalo Muñoz, and will be moderated by WWF Climate Practice Lead and President of COP20, Manuel Pulgar-Vidal.

The climate action emerging from the September summit creates an important opportunity to build momentum for success at COP25 and beyond. To make sure we capitalize on this step forward, it is important to discuss the role climate action from cities, business, regions, investors, and other “nonparty actors” can play in supporting intergovernmental discussions in the lead up to a new round of NDCs and the implementation phase of the Paris Agreement.

The event follows “Summit to Summit: Pre-2020 Action,” a special Marrakech Partnership for Global Climate Action event at United Nations headquarters on Saturday afternoon that focuses on the achievements of global climate action to date. This discussion will build on that event by looking forward from UNCAS.

Key questions to address include:

  • How do we take forward climate action from UNCAS in New York to COP25?
  • How can COP25 make best use of the groundswell of climate action?
  • How can COP25 create a foundation for strong climate action going forward?
