International Roundtable on the Future of Thermal Coal

Invitation Only

The International Roundtable on the Future of Thermal Coal will bring together a group of carefully selected energy and resource sector policymakers, research experts, labor representatives, and industry leaders to discuss the challenges entailed with coal transition in a number of key countries and regions. Insights from policymakers and leaders that have made or committed to transition will help ground the conversation in practical experience. The dialogue will help stakeholders facing similar challenges better orient their decision making in relation to coal transitions. The dialogue is intended to support further diplomatic or international efforts to implement feasible, Paris-compatible, and just coal transitions.

The roundtable builds on recently completed research from the Coal Transitions Project, launched in 2016 by IDDRI and Climate Strategies, together with international research experts in China, India, South Africa, Australia, Poland, and Germany. The Roundtable will be coupled with an event focused on just transition for the coal and energy sector in South Africa.
