Identity-Based Mass Violence in Urban Contexts: Uncovered
Identity-Based Mass Violence in Urban Contexts: Uncovered is a groundbreaking investigation into the complexities of structural and acute violence in cities through the lens of a new concept of identity-based mass violence (IBMV).
The edited volume began by identifying a core problem: violence is increasing globally, and existing models of understanding and preventing violence are falling short. The international system that prevailed after the end of World War II is being hollowed out, conflict is increasing worldwide, and individuals continue to experience exceptionally high levels of violence in places considered at peace.
The mission of this project was to consider how to bring the fields of atrocity prevention, urban-violence prevention, and peacebuilding together by exploring the alignments and overlaps among these disciplines. As a result, the volume intentionally bridges communities and blends approaches.
Rigor was essential, and so was humanizing the discussion. As a result, the volume comprises two types of contributions: those that are academically researched and peer-reviewed, and others that are more personal and artistic. The latter focus on the lived implications of the problems and solutions connected to identity-based mass violence, while the former offers perspectives informed through scholarship and analysis to further define the field.
The volume begins with establishing why cities and identity are such critical variables in reducing violence and building peace. It flows from there into explorations of the problems that lead to structural and acute violence in urban areas. The second half focuses on the related solutions available to address the complexities that tie together identity, place, and power. Throughout, personal narratives, experiences, and art reveal the implications of violence and the meaning of peace.
This volume highlights examples and opportunities to inspire actors, both within and outside cities, to take tangible action toward understanding and addressing structural and acute identity-based mass violence.
