Prosperity Post Fossil Fuels: Collaboration for Just Energy Transitions in the Mediterranean
Open to all COP30 Blue Zone delegates
Most forecasters today, including the IEA, expect global Oil & Gas (O&G) demand to peak by 2030. Leveraging the Prosperity Post Fossil Fuels work, this event will convene experts, policymakers, finance, labor, and civil society to explore the transboundary implications of demand decline for fossil fuel dependent economies in the Mediterranean. The discussion will explore evidence-based solutions to maximize opportunities for economic diversification and enable pathways to prosperity post fossil fuels.
Oil and gas (O&G) exporters must diversify their economies and energy systems to prepare for the energy transition. The Mediterranean has immense potential for clean energy production–yet alongside this promising future, the transition will also bring transboundary impacts. For countries like Algeria and Libya, whose fiscal revenues rely on the O&G sector, the decline can severely restrict their economic development and hinder transition efforts.
This event will explore transformative, collaborative approaches to support Mediterranean countries at this crossroads of the transition. Speakers will discuss how better data (including modelling) on the socioeconomic impacts of demand decline can strengthen the capacity of exporter countries to plan economic diversification strategies and balance transition trade-offs. International cooperation–including upcoming Euro-Mediterranean partnerships–must also be leveraged to overcome implementation barriers, such as finance and technology transfer.
Taking place from 9:00 AM—10:00 AM on Wednesday, November 19, 2025, at the Mediterranean Pavilion within the Blue Zone of the COP30 venue.
