Renewable Peace: Documenting Peace and Renewable Energy
Invitation Only
The Stanley Center for Peace and Security, Energy Peace Partners, the John Sloan Dickey Center for International Understanding at Dartmouth, and the Stimson Center are pleased to host this Climate Week dinner discussion and launch of this new film series, Renewable Peace.
Across conflict-affected and fragile settings, renewable energy is doing more than expanding energy access. It is contributing to peace and security by supporting livelihoods, improving safety, strengthening resilience, providing increased access to health and education services, and reducing dependence on costly and insecure diesel fuel supply chains. In many areas, it is accomplishing this where years of peacebuilding efforts have fallen short.
The film features human-centered stories from the field—voices from the Democratic Republic of Congo, Nigeria, and South Sudan where renewable energy projects are generating peace dividends—combined with the perspective of experts highlighting the opportunities for renewable energy to reduce insecurity, prevent conflict, and promote stability. The film showcases an alternative pathway to peace at a time when new approaches are needed: conflict has increased; climate, energy, and security are inextricably linked; and traditional international peace and security measures have broken down.
Unlocking this potential requires collaboration across sectors. The evening will bring together leaders with diverse perspectives to consider how to collectively advance a renewable energy and peace agenda.
