Just Transition at COP30: Delivering Concrete Outcomes for Africa

Invitation Only

Since its inclusion in the Paris Agreement, Just Transition has gained prominence in global climate discussions, offering a pathway to ensure that climate action supports workers, communities, and countries—especially those most vulnerable to both climate impacts and economic disruption. Across Africa, where economies are deeply tied to natural resources and where millions depend on sectors like agriculture, energy, and mining, the Just Transition framework presents an opportunity to bring together sustainable development needs with climate commitments.

The adoption of the Just Transition Work Programme at COP27 in 2022 marked a critical step forward, raising expectations for COP30 in Brazil to deliver concrete decisions that advance equitable climate transitions. For Africa, this is a pivotal moment: a Just Transition must address the continent’s unique development needs, ensuring access to clean energy, green industrialization, and sustainable livelihoods while safeguarding the rights of those most affected by climate chaos and shifting global policies.

Yet, as multilateralism faces growing strains, Just Transition remains one of the few areas where consensus is possible—one that aligns with Africa’s call for climate justice, fair financing, and inclusive prosperity. With an ambitious draft on the table, this informal dialogue among African ministers, delegation heads, experts, and civil society stakeholders offers a space to identify strategic opportunities, and ensure that COP30 delivers meaningful wins for the continent and the world.
