Our strategic approach to nurturing progress is the product of continuous, careful thought. At the core of all our work is an unending commitment to peace with dignity, justice, and freedom.
Since our founding 70 years ago, the Stanley Center has pursued global peace and security by nurturing policy progress and systems transformation across the globe.
But as the world has changed, so has the focus of our work and our strategic approach for deciding what goals to pursue.
Today, we pursue impact on three global challenges where progress is vital in order to realize our vision of a secure and enduring peace.
Alongside our global partners, the Stanley Center nurtures policy progress and systems change on three global challenges: mitigating climate change, avoiding the use of nuclear weapons, and preventing mass violence and atrocities.

We work to achieve a peaceful, equitable, and livable climate future with global temperature rise safely limited to 1.5°C.

We advance risk reduction solutions to help states prevent the use of nuclear weapons.

We are committed to early, structural interventions that prevent identity-based mass violence and atrocities.
We believe that change will not happen by accident but through strategic, thoughtful, sustained advocacy for progress, and we devote our time and resources where we believe we can make the most difference.
The Stanley Center is a private operating foundation that utilizes our resources in partnership with others to organize global convenings, commission original research, produce and develop important stories, create fellowships, and provide additional tangible resources to help achieve our collective goals.
In all our work, we aim to be thoughtful partners who elevate the perspectives of diverse stakeholders around the globe. We never unilaterally set agendas but instead aim to facilitate the discovery of common ground among stakeholders.
Our experts track policy action across the globe and help identify questions and issues that require urgent attention.
We bring the right people together, in the right place at the right time, to find opportunities for progress.
Through our Journalism & Media programming, we support the media in telling independent, important stories about complex global challenges.
Our strategy is guided by several principles that inform what work we pursue.
We devote our time and resources where we believe we can make the most difference.
We believe meaningful policy progress and systems change cannot happen without action by multiple actors. We bring diverse stakeholder perspectives to the table and ensure their voices are heard.
We question assumptions and seek innovative approaches.
We seek opportunities to explore less-conventional, more-nuanced topics. We take risks and learn from our mistakes.
As a private operating foundation, we have the freedom and flexibility to change course when it makes strategic sense, so we never miss a chance to create impact.
We believe rigorous and independent reporting is critical to strong global governance. We provide journalists with training and resources that help them build better-informed societies and more-accountable institutions.
In all our work, we meet communities and stakeholders where they are and work with them to chart a path forward.
