Southern Flows: Pragmatic Approaches to Multidimensional Security in the Americas

The year 2014 marks the tenth anniversary of the adoption of UN Security Council Resolution 1540. Since 2004, Resolution 1540 has successfully promoted the worldwide adoption of supply-side controls to prevent the proliferation of weapons of mass destruction (WMD) to nonstate actors.

Through innovative “whole–of-society” partnerships among civil society, international and regional organizations, and national governments, the resolution has also opened the door to new capacity-building resources for public health, citizen security, and trade and economic growth in the developing world.

Join senior international officials and civil society representatives in a conversation organized in collaboration between the Stanley Center, Stimson, and the Organization of American States that celebrates the tenth anniversary of the adoption of Resolution 1540.

This event, featuring Ms. Angela Kane, UN High Representative for Disarmament Affairs, introduces Southern Flows: WMD Nonproliferation in the Developing World, an edited volume that synthesizes the lessons on 1540 implementation in six regions of the Global South: the Caribbean, Central America, the Andean region, the Middle East, Eastern Africa, and Southeast Asia.
