Responsibility to Prevent in Africa: Leveraging Institutional Capacity to Mitigate Atrocity Risk
On March 3, 2015, the Stanley Center will host a workshop in cooperation with the Kofi Annan International Peacekeeping Training Centre (KAIPTC) in Accra, Ghana. The workshop will be an opportunity to share research on the state of Responsibility to Protect (R2P) in Africa, as well as the capacity of African states to protect citizens.
The Stanley Center’s commitment to promote norm acceptance and implementation of R2P is a core component of the center’s programming in human protection. One of the organization’s modes of work is the Policy Analysis Brief (PAB) which provides analysis and policy recommendations for policymakers on critical topics that impact global security.
In 2014 the center commissioned a PAB which was coauthored by Dr. Kwesi Aning and Frank Okyere of the Kofi Annan International Peacekeeping Training Centre titled Responsibility to Prevent in Africa: Leveraging Institutional Capacity to Mitigate Atrocity Risk. The objective of this PAB was to understand the unique nature of the African state, its capacity to protect citizens, and the role of R2P in Africa. Workshop participants will include African scholars and academia, policymakers, military personnel, civil society, and African Union representatives.
