Recommendations for Nuclear Material Governance

Invitation Only

At this off-the-record event, Ambassador John Bernhard, former Permanent Representative of Denmark to the IAEA and Mr. Kenneth Luongo, President of the Partnership for Global Security will share a number of recommendations from the Nuclear Security Governance Experts Group, including the model text of an International Convention on Nuclear Security (ICNS).

This proposed convention would establish an effective and sustainable international legal mechanism that allows for continuous improvement and adaptation of the global nuclear security regime. The ICNS would address dangerous weaknesses that exist in the current regime by setting clear international security standards and allowing for the necessary assessment of their implementation. It would also support the important work of the International Atomic Energy Agency and would be open to all nations.

The Nuclear Security Governance Experts Group is a globally diverse group with broad nuclear sector experience working to define a long-term vision for nuclear security and a path for achieving a secure nuclear future. The NSGEG is convened by the Asan Institute for Policy Studies, Partnership for Global Security, and the Stanley Center.
