Accounting Specialist

The Stanley Center for Peace and Security seeks an accounting specialist to contribute to the organization’s mission, vision, and strategic goals by performing accounting transactions with a strong attention to detail, working collaboratively with all staff, and communicating effectively in an open, professional manner.

The ideal candidate will have:

  • A minimum of an associate degree or related coursework in accounting.
  • Working knowledge of accounting software.
  • Excellent organizational and interpersonal skills.
  • Experience in accounts payable, payroll, journal entries, account reconciliation, and international payments.

Position Overview

The accounting specialist reports to the director of finance/corporate treasurer and is responsible for:

  • Performing the accounts payable function, including writing checks and making electronic transfers between accounts and to vendors.
  • Reviewing and verifying expense reports and credit card statements for completeness and accuracy.
  • Maintaining and recording transactions in Timberline (Sage) accounting software.
  • Coordinating the payroll function by reviewing and submitting biweekly timesheet information and deduction changes to the third-party payroll processor and preparing quarterly payroll reports.
  • Maintaining subsidiary schedules for flexible benefit plans, 403(b) plan, life and disability insurance, etc.
  • Reconciling monthly bank account statements, preparing and entering monthly journal entries and job direct cost entries, preparing and reviewing month-end financial statements.
  • Assisting with schedule for annual audit and budget.
  • Updating reports for the director of finance, leadership team, and other staff.
  • Preparing tax Forms 1099.
  • Ordering and purchasing all supplies, and other miscellaneous administrative duties.

This position is located at the Stanley Center office in Muscatine, Iowa, a community of 23,000 people on the Mississippi River. The area offers affordable housing and a variety of recreational opportunities. Within commuting distance of Muscatine are Iowa City (population 70,000)—home of the University of Iowa and the nationally recognized University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics—and the Quad Cities area—comprising Davenport and Bettendorf, Iowa, and Moline and Rock Island, Illinois, with a combined population of about 350,000.
